Home Studios, led by Oliver Haslegrave, has designed some of New York City’s hippest places to dine, drink and be seen. However, Home Studios’ first residential project is located in Brooklyn townhouse.
Curves adorn this Fort Greene townhouse’s interior in abundance – from its custom Vesper console in the parlour dining room, copper-lined bathroom nook, oak and travertine details in the hallway and even copper details throughout – offering elegant and subdued sweeping lines that exude class and subtlety.
Aesthetics
Home Studios was established by former book editor Oliver Haslegrave in 2009 and quickly earned acclaim for creating iconic bars and restaurants across New York City, such as Manhattan Inn with its luxurious, decadent interior or Goat Town with its shimmering vaulted ceiling – both examples showcasing how Home Studios artfully blends rich historical references with contemporary restraint in their designs. Naturally then, when embarking on their first residential renovation they applied this form-meets-function approach.
At Home Studios’ 185-square-meter apartment, a palette of muted tones combined with pale oak creates a luminous atmosphere that bounces off surfaces, with copper accents adding subtle depth. Copper is used throughout, from the custom chimney hood in the kitchen to elegant fixtures in the master bathroom and stunning custom lighting fixtures by local studio Fort Standard in both spaces – adding subtle richness as seen with Sabine Marcelis’ Cesca chairs in dining. Home Studios designed and installed 10 site-specific furniture and lighting pieces created ten new site-specific pieces collaborating with long-term fabrication partners in local fabrication partners; their creation created an integrated aesthetic between vintage and modern furnishings that seamlessly integrated both vintage and modern pieces including their Vesper console in living room as well as Fort Standard solid walnut table by local studio Fort Standard solid walnut table by local studio Fort Standard solid walnut table by local studio Fort Standard as well as Sabine Marcelis’ Cesca chairs in dining area – creating an aesthetic that seamlessly integrated both vintage and modern furnishings like Vesper console by Home Studios’ Vesper console in living room, Fort Standard solid walnut table by local studio Fort Standard locally-fabricated from local fabrication partners-collaborating on long-term fabrication partnerships in producing them all for their future use within this new aesthetic which seamlessly integrated both vintage and modern furnishings like Sabine Marcelis’ solid walnut table by local studio Fort Standard from local studio Fort Standard as well as Sabine Marcelis’ woven Cesca chairs by Sabine Marcelis from Sabine Marcelis from Sabine Marcelis from Sabine Marcelis’ Cesca chairs from Sabine Marcelis’ woven Cesca chairs from Sabine Marcelis by Sabine Marcelis made locally by Fort Standard from local studio Fort Standard solid walnut table by local studio Fort Standard as Sabine Marcelis’ solid walnut table which also featured Fort Standard plus Sabine Marcelis created as well.
Recurring themes include subtle curves, from the rounded windows that frame the hallway to an alcove with gentle curvatures in the children’s bedroom. Similar arcs define the headboard of master bedroom’s custom walnut bed and steel and glass bench in foyer. Swooping language extends even into open kitchen/diner where Home Studios custom Swing pendant illuminates repurposed wood dining table.
Home Studios completed the Fort Greene townhouse, completed in 2021, as their second project in New York City and continued their exploration of “illuminating a client’s narrative through thoughtful and attentive design expressions and details”. To do this, they employed an array of materials in this voluminous three-bedroom two-bathroom apartment including travertine, terracotta, brass bronze steel ash and reclaimed oak which can all be found throughout.
Preserving both the original coffered ceiling and intricate ornate railings of the staircase, the studio designed an exquisite and timeless interior that exudes refinement while remaining welcoming. A mix of hand-made mosaic tiles and luxurious stone elevate the neutral tones in the master bathroom, while infusing drama through dark custom concrete finish on walls and flooring in the powder room.
Materials
Materials used to build a home recording studio can have an enormous effect on its final result, while mic types will have an enormous effect on sound quality. To avoid becoming overwhelmed with all of the available choices, it’s wise to establish what goals your studio serves before choosing equipment suitable for both needs and budget.
Home Studios of Brooklyn excels at crafting spaces that seamlessly merge contemporary design with an intimate neighborhood aesthetic. Their latest project, a Fort Greene townhouse, showcases their talent through custom and vintage furniture and lighting combined with impressive materials such as Farrow & Ball’s Pointing shade covering dining room ceilings while silvery Ball Green highlights parlour stair millwork – creating a subtle color palette throughout that is similar to Daunt’s Albatross motel across the street that they renovated earlier this year.
Home Studios’ Vesper console from their Living room collection takes center stage alongside furnishings from local contemporaries Egg Collective, Atelier de Troupe and Sabine Marcelis. In the dining area is Fort Standard’s solid walnut table; three pendant lights from an adjacent boutique add further ambience along with Homework from Home Studios (their furniture and lighting line).
Home Studios’ hospitality portfolio boasts a variety of projects, such as designing the Nantucket bar and restaurant with maritime references as well as the reimagined Italian eatery near Harvard University with plush booths and banquettes. Their expertise in hotel, restaurant, and residential design allows them to successfully overcome various design challenges for exceptional results.
Building your own recording studio at home can be a rewarding project that gives you creative freedom while saving costs over renting an outside facility. By understanding key considerations for designing an at-home music studio, you can craft an atmosphere tailored to suit your creative vision and production style. While this may take time, having all of the appropriate equipment in place can allow for professional-quality recordings to be created in no time at all!

At 20 Bond St in New York’s NoHo neighborhood, the firm used a blend of custom furniture and vintage finds to update a 1925 building. Color was key; Farrow and Ball’s “pigeon” hue covers walls and cabinets while copper details delineated spaces such as an eye-catching copper hood and pendant light in the kitchen; or an eye-catching mosaic made of tan marble that wraps tub, shower and seating nook in guest bathrooms.

Spaces
Home Studios provide artists, photographers and filmmakers with an ideal setting and professional tools to bring their visions to life. The spaces are sound-isolated and unfurnished so you can design an ideal studio for your project. Home Studios often come equipped with air conditioning as well as temperature/angle-adjustable ceiling spotlights; some may also come equipped with fully functional kitchen and bathrooms to make shoots as comfortable as possible.
Along with home studios, there are also other spaces available for rental that can serve various events or photoshoots; others provide more privacy for meetings or office work. Many have bathrooms, kitchens and roof terraces suitable for filming; some even boast functional fireplaces!
Home studios differ from commercial studios by being accessible to anyone who has the equipment. This can include amateur photographers, video game players and professional engineers alike. The main distinction between them is equipment quality: some home studios use expensive professional-grade gear while some utilize consumer products instead.
