Love Hymns That Will Make Your Heart Skip a Beat

love love love hymn

Love songs have long been an integral part of musical history. From timeless ballads from the ’50s to club bangers from today, these musical expressions of romantic longings have given voice to our lives and emotions.

Love songs can be written quickly (Elvis Costello wrote “All You Need Is Love” in 10 minutes for fun) or take longer, like Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah which took four years.

The Story

As is often the case, this beautiful hymn about God’s love began during a period of profound loss and difficulty. Elizabeth Payton Prentiss, an American author from the 19th century, composed this beautiful piece after she lost her son; writing it all in one evening but keeping it hidden for 13 years!

She spent much of this period packing oranges into containers for sale at the grocery store to make ends meet, often pausing to remember an impactful sermon she heard about Jesus’ love before writing out its lyrics on any piece of paper she could find.

F. M. Lehman was one of the early modern song writers who decided to add two additional stanzas and choruses in 1917, creating the now iconic tune he called ‘Dreamland.

His heart was touched by the same message that had touched Payton Prentiss over one hundred years earlier, retelling its story once more and singing its message of love, peace, and understanding in song – messages we desperately need today and which have been passed down through generations! How wonderful that such messages have survived!
