Metallica
Metallica has long been considered one of the defining acts in rock music history. Since their formation in 1981, Metallica have released some of the greatest albums ever, such as 1984’s “Kill ‘Em All” and 1986’s “Master of Puppets.” At first it seemed Metallica could do no wrong but this has not always been the case – their struggles include drug addictions, fan criticism, internal tensions and drug dependency issues all culminating in becoming respected elder statesmen of rock music.
Metallica have sold more than 58 million albums in the United States alone and been nominated for nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards and a Billboard Music Award. Metallica have had a significant influence in music’s evolution; being widely credited with revitalizing heavy metal genre. Their success helped pave way for other thrash bands like Slayer and Megadeth to develop as well.
Metallica has released many well-known songs, such as “Ride the Lightning,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “Enter Sandman.” Many believe their music echoes feelings of marginalization – appealing to people who feel powerless against a society which values things such as money, love, and straight teeth that can easily slip away.
Metallica’s musical style consists of fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship reminiscent of Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth thrash bands. Their fast riffs and violent lyrics aim to communicate power, anger and grief; thus inspiring many other metal bands and young guitarists alike. Metallica have inspired numerous other metal acts while inspiring many young players to pick up guitar.
Metallica has experimented with various genres over time, yet have returned to their thrash roots with recent releases. In 2008, Metallica released Death Magnetic to widespread critical acclaim – this album marked their first collaboration with an artist outside their genre; later that same year they issued another thrash metal album Lulu which did not receive as high of reception, yet demonstrated that Metallica were still committed to this style of music.

The Beatles
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr’s legendary band the Beatles defined the 1960s like no other musical act could. Influencing music and culture alike they set standards never equalled since.
The Beatles came together in Liverpool rock ‘n’ roll scene as self-taught musicians. At first they dabbled with skiffle, an infectious type of folk music. Later they joined Britain’s beat music scene of the 1950s where they added Pete Best as drummer before adopting various names such as Quarrymen, Silver Beetles and finally just simply The Beatles.
In 1964, The Beatles first made an appearance on American television, sparking the start of Beatlemania – an unprecedented phenomenon which would forever alter America. Their arrival ushered in an unprecedented wave of British bands known as the British Invasion; with music that blended skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock and roll into global youth culture in unprecedented ways; their long hairstyles becoming emblems of youthful rebellion.
Lennon played a pivotal role in steering The Beatles towards psychedelia through songs such as Rain and Tomorrow Never Knows, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Strawberry Fields Forever and I Am the Walrus. Additionally, McCartney contributed significantly to London’s avant garde scene which also became increasingly experimental.
Brian Epstein managed the Beatles from 1962 on, when he successfully broke them away from Bert Kaempfert Productions contract and helped secure an agreement with Parlophone which allowed more creative freedom for sound and presentation choices – leading them to release such albums as Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road albums. Touring continued throughout this time and many countries around the world welcomed The Beatles; their final public performance took place at Shea Stadium in New York on August 15, 1966 which is considered as first stadium rock concert performance ever held since!
