The Growing Electronic Music Scene in Ukraine

In the 2000s, dance music with Ukrainian influences made waves on a global stage. Genres such as drum ‘n bass, house, techno and ambient all developed significant fan bases and artists.

Artbat, Miss Monique, KOROLOVA Noizar and 8kays became widely-renowned names on the club scene, while Heinali explored experimental electronic in Kyiv. International communities offered support both verbally and through actions taken.

DJ Sender

As the world began transitioning away from communism and towards capitalism, Ukraine gradually adapted to dance music from abroad. Producers quickly gravitated toward Kyiv in search of supportive environments in which to make their own beats with passion, determination and DIY spirit – infusing traditional Ukrainian folklore into their music in ways still prevalent today.

Sender, a Kyiv-based producer renowned for combining classic disco sounds with contemporary house music, has received great acclaim for creating an upbeat and energetic environment for his audience. Since 2000 he has been part of Ukrainian scene and now one of its most celebrated figures; performing at numerous large events and festivals around the globe.

T-Zhuk, another Kyiv producer, has made waves internationally with his international hit “Amaga”. Inspired by MFG and Astral Projection’s goa trance music, his compositions feature heavy synth bass with intricate melodies – something which DJs from around the globe support him for. These include Fergie, Moussa Clarke (BBC Radio 1), Laidback Luke Jaimie Fanatic Mr Slide (Netherlands), Ian Carey Dave Amstrong Joachim Garraud (France), Ian Carey Dave Amstrong Joachim Garraud (France), as well as Fergie herself (alongside others).

In Ukraine, the blossoming electronic scene has been an engine of change. Even during 2022’s conflict in Ukraine these talented local performers and producers continued performing and creating events despite its difficulties of organizing events.

DJ Lutique hails from Kyiv and has made quite the name for himself as an energetic DJ. Combining house and electronica music for an infectious, upbeat experience. His energetic performances have gained him an ever-increasing fan base while PREVIEW on Kiss FM Ukraine features as one of his popular radio mix show appearances.

Da Candy and DJ Light are two acclaimed Ukrainian dance artists. DJ Light is known for her dynamic stage presence and high-energy performances that have amassed her a worldwide fanbase. Her diverse musical offerings and colorful personality keep audiences entranced for an entire performance. She is also an experienced producer with numerous hits across platforms.

Daria Korolova of Kyiv has earned international renown as an innovative techno artist, known for her dark and mesmerizing soundscapes that have mesmerized audiences around the globe. Additionally, Daria serves as a promoter and has launched her own music label; she has performed at many renowned clubs like Berlin’s Berghain club; she has released remixes that have gone on to achieve international acclaim; she engages with her followers regularly via social media to discuss her work and build connections.

DJ Nastia

Nastia is an accomplished DJ, songwriter and producer from Ukraine who serves as an international ambassador of its electronic music scene. She has established her own radio show; won residency at Moscow club ARMA17; created Propaganda label and event series NECHTO; as well as co-founding Strichka Festival among many others events since 2005; known for energetic yet genuine performances since 2005 she currently dates Stef Mendesidis (Dutch music producer).

Music-wise, her musical styles include industrial techno, minimal and house. Her music draws heavily on influences from her home country with many tracks addressing political affairs within Bosnia-Hercegovina. Nastia is also deeply engaged with community outreach and education. She founded Closer Connections – a studio-school offering DJ basics as well as workshops for aspiring artists – while hosting events for the local electronic music scene.

The Ukrainian electronic music scene continues to thrive despite challenging circumstances. Driven by an interest in modernising culture and encouraging young talent through educational initiatives like Closer Connections music school. Here students learn the fundamentals of DJing before performing live concerts as a form of showcase. Furthermore, Closer Connections music school has played a crucial role in connecting local producers and artists from around the globe, furthering understanding of art while simultaneously supporting emerging young talent from Ukraine.

GRVGRV

Ukrainian electronic music has emerged as a global force. Local artists and DJs create dance-oriented music inspired by international trends while remaining deeply rooted in local cultures – creating music with both universal appeal and cultural authenticity that serves both ethnomusicologists and audiences alike.

GRVGRV is a Kyiv-based multidisciplinary artist who uses music to express her experiences and vision of culture. Her work has made waves on social media, with Rinse France and Radio Rudina featuring her as one of their guests. She strongly believes in art being accessible for everyone regardless of economic standing.

In the early 2000s, new technology enabled Ukrainian musicians to experiment with electronic music. It quickly gained in popularity among listeners and artists began specializing in different subgenres of it. Since its inaugural Brave Factory Festival in Kyiv has established an outstanding legacy by featuring all aspects of this genre while expanding to showcase international musicians as well.

ARTBAT is an esteemed figure on the Ukrainian electronic music scene. Her sound has matured with time to become more sophisticated. Her debut album MORPHO offers an emotional musical journey that captures her life experiences — unrequited love, breaking away from social media addiction and discovering oneself within life’s cycles.

Artem Stoliarov and Batish are two of the most successful Ukraine-based acts, their music fuelling intimate dance floors as well as arenas with energy. Influenced by war in Ukraine and their desire to return home, their sound combines dynamic rhythms with melodies inspired by its traditions.

After the war in 2014, the local dance scene persevered despite difficult conditions. Event organizers faced curfews, air raid alerts, and the risk of power outages due to damaged infrastructure; nevertheless, they continued promoting dance music as an integral component of culture.

Recently, Ukrainian electronic music has gained worldwide acclaim through the release of numerous impressive tracks. Kyiv-based collective GRVGRV in particular has made waves for their signature blends of Russian language vocals with humorous lyrics; their five track EP “Minlivoiu Maroiu” also incorporates breakbeat drums with delicate string sounds for an audacious yet soothing experience.

Koloah is another influential Ukrainian producer who blends soulful house and techno music with folk motifs to produce captivating sets that powerfully resonate culturally and speak of resistance against oppression. His music has won him praise from major DJs as well as featuring on numerous compilations.
