Whether these instruments were for ritual use or leisure play, they were typically made by community members through practice and skill over time.
The oldest known instruments were likely first played by Neanderthal cave-dwellers and are likely flutes with finger holes; early examples may have been small and simple, though over time humans learned how to control and appreciate all the different tones produced.
