Bajo sexto
Bajo sexto is a Mexican string instrument similar to a guitar with twelve double courses and six strings plucked using either traditional left-hand methods or modern melodic and chordal ones by right-handed players. It’s usually played with accompaniment from accordion and drums.
Bajo quinto originated with conjunto music of Northern Mexico and Texas, particularly Tejano. However, as its popularity increased musicians began to incorporate it into other musical genres including jazz and Western swing. Today it remains one of the most iconic instruments associated with Tejano music.
Not only is the instrument steeped in history, but its versatility and durability also make it a necessity for any musician regardless of genre or instrumentation. You can use it on various surfaces such as stages and recording studios; plus it’s easily transportable making it an excellent option for traveling musicians.
