Repitch Recordings presents Dys Functional Electronic Music X as their first ambivalent compilation in five years, meant to reflect its content which often deviates from norms while distance itself from club functionalism.
After 10 years in the game, this trio remains as motivated to explore new avenues within electronic music as to fill dancefloors. A contemporary mix of styles and genres brings out their best work.
Shapednoise
Sicilian producer Shapednoise (ne Nino Pedone) creates large sheets of industrialized noise, perfecting its mix with abrasive, transcendent rhythms that seamlessly merge. His sound experiments carry with them political significance; Pedone doesn’t shy away from exploring darker and unsettling moments within music production.
His striking style has attracted some of the top underground labels, from Hospital Productions in 2013 (his debut LP was called ‘The Day Of Revenge’) through Type and 2021’s Aesthesis on Numbers (respectively). His music pushes beyond traditional techno boundaries by mixing rave-inspired chaos with extreme noise and hardcore continuum influences such as metal, glitch and experimental hip hop music.
Pedone’s latest, “Absurd Matter”, marks his brand new WEIGHT LOOMING imprint’s debut release. This project’s goal is to explore bass weight, texture noise and transcendence; capitalizing on the energy provided by a handpicked roster of collaborators such as NYC rap duo Armand Hammer; French producer Brodinski of techno-rap pioneers Brodinski and David Lynch collaborator Dean Hurley; vanguard Philly poet Moor Mother as well as Bruiser Brigade member ZelooperZ.
Shapednoise offers an intense dystopian vision of futuristic techno that’s unrelentingly intense and harsh at first, yet as the record progresses it reveals its deceptive depths – each track retains an element of beauty that shows a sinister side of their music beyond just what one might expect of futuristic techno.
Through his record, Pedone displays his passion and expertise in club music. This can be seen clearly in tracks like ‘Mastice Riddim (VIP)’ with its drill-infused bass chug featuring vacuum-packed samples and droning frequencies which give way to an abrasive yet borderline danceable beat; providing satisfying moments which reveal his sense of humour behind its darker aesthetic. It’s one example among many where this comes across clearly.
D. Carbone
Carbone has dedicated his professional career to upholding acid and rave culture. As co-owner of Cosmo Rhythmatic and 3TH Records as well as REPITCH and Carbone Recordings labels he also produces under the moniker Honzo, playing an important part in Italy’s acid scene.
Dys Functional Electronic Music X from Ascion, Carbone and Shapednoise showcases their dedication to expanding dancefloor music’s horizons. The compilation represents an alternative state of mind that goes beyond club functionalism, each track offering an original take on techno’s ever-evolving evolutions. Starting off in Italy with Shapednoise and Gabber Eleganza chewing drill and jungle in ‘Mastice Riddim (VIP)’ to Bari DJ Plant Texture herding pendulous breakbeat hardcore trample on ‘Threat The Music With Respect’ to Croatian Strahinja Arbutina’s unyielding 2-step noise seething on ‘Digital Hoarder’ – Dys Functional Electronic Music X is an evocative snapshot of future soundscape augmented by deep drones and glitch sonorities.
Pedone
Pedone’s work showcases the contemporary hybridization of electronic genres and styles, often breaking free of club functionalism. Their output represents an ever-innovative network of artists and producers who continue to push the envelope of musical boundaries.
Ten years into REPITCH’s existence and they remain just as dedicated to pushing the limits of dancefloor music as when they started out. Their latest installment, Dys Functional Electronic Music X, proves this dedication. Beginning with Shapednoise & Gabber Eleganza’s off-kilter club cut that’s sure to throw dancers off balance and continuing through Asciona Carbone Pedone’s state-of-the-art state of union on Asciona Carbone Pedone this record sets an impressive benchmark for future releases, marking an essential collection for anyone interested in REPITCH’s unique blend of cutting edge sound design and floor filling groove.
