Music can be controversial within Islam; scholars vary on its permissibility or otherwise. Some maintain that all forms of music are forbidden while others cite individual instruments and genres as possible exceptions.

Some scholars assert that music is forbidden under Islam and use this claim as an argument for not listening to or playing musical instruments. Unfortunately, this claim cannot be proven as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not specifically prohibit playing musical instruments.

Islam considers the duff a sacred instrument. It can be played during weddings and religious ceremonies as well as accompanying singing or chanting.

However, many scholars disagree with this view and suggest that verses from the Quran prohibiting music are generalized and don’t differentiate between national or foreign, original or nonoriginal or traditional or nontraditional genres of music.

Some scholars also hold that listening to musical instruments is forbidden as it creates negative emotions and diverts Muslims away from worshiping Allah. As proof, some scholars point to hadith wherein Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) put his finger into his ears when hearing an instrument but didn’t order Ibn Umar to follow suit, showing it is permissible and non-haram. This evidence supports their claim.

Every person possesses a natural tendency (Fitra), which, if unaffected by sinful habits, should reveal to him what is lawful and unlawful behavior. Unfortunately, some are so caught up in their sinful ways that they do not want to listen to what their conscience tells them.

That is what leads them into the grips of forbidden entertainment: starting by listening to forbidden music at home and in universities/clubs before eventually engaging in forbidden gatherings such as drinking alcohol freely with men/women mixery etc. Such gatherings tend to enslave them to evil and push them further away from Islam; thus warning against their dangers is crucial so they heed Allah and His Messenger and obey His commandments.

According to Ibn al-Qayyim, all four Imams agreed that engaging in instruments of forbidden entertainment is forbidden, including purchasing, selling, manufacturing and playing them (for instance flute and drum players; tapping a stick against something); as well as singing over these tunes or playing these tunes in prayer services reciting or singing with them recited with obligatory precaution.
