Century Media Records
Century Media Records quickly rose to become an essential component of heavy metal music since their establishment in 1988. Notable for their wide variety of musical styles – and exemplifying the company slogan of “diversity in extremes”, Century Media helped many metal bands such as Asphyx, Tiamat, In This Moment and Shadows Fall launch their careers on Century’s roster; additionally its offshoot labels Century Black Records and Abacus Records also flourished within its ranks.
Century Black, an imprint of Century Media that served as “Miramax Films for black metal”, released or re-released hard-to-find foreign albums that would otherwise have been impossible to come by (usually released through smaller labels such as Malicious Records or Candlelight Records). By 2000, however, Century Black had been discontinued and most bands either moved on to other American metal labels, changed musical direction altogether or became part of Century Media Family.
The label has experienced several high points throughout its history, such as The Gathering’s 1995 album Mandylion featuring Anneke van Giersbergen as lead vocalist. This album marked the first metal album with female singer Anneke van Giersbergen and set a trend towards female involvement in metal music. Furthermore, Mandylion became commercially successful, becoming their debut band to reach Billboard 200 album chart chart status for sale.
Today, Sony Music continues to release albums by artists across various genres – most notably Lacuna Coil with three top 10 albums on Billboard 200. Both offices of this label can be found in Dortmund and New York City.
Loudwire
Loudwire is an online magazine covering heavy metal music. Owned and published by Townsquare Media, the publication regularly hosts interviews with some of rock and metal’s biggest stars such as Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Anthrax, Judas Priest Stone Sour Jane’s Addiction Phil Anselmo as well as hosting its own Loudwire Music Awards voted upon by readers.
Heavy metal and hard rock bands tend to be non-commercial and niche groups that struggled to gain mainstream TV appearances in the past, however as networks grew their schedules into the evening and night hours and music channels began showing live performances, spaces opened up for them such as Slipknot and Lamb of God.
Some of these appearances may be gimmicky; others can be downright bizarre. One such appearance, involving Black Sabbath on a kids show in the mid-1980s, remains one of the strangest metal TV appearances ever. Still, any fan of metal should watch this clip as the band performs a song from their classic 1970 album Paranoid on this video clip.
Elyose Official
Elyose is a French metal band formed by Anthony Chognard (ex Smash Hit Combo) on guitar and Justine Daae on vocals. Together they make for an impressive pairing; Anthony offers vibrant songwriting while Daae can deliver emotive feminine vocals in French; this results in a modern yet punchy style similar to Lacuna Coil, Bring Me the Horizon, In This Moment or Epica fans will find plenty to appreciate here.
Deviante showcases Elyose as a promising female-fronted nu metal band with its dueling of rap/bark/siren vocals on “Le glaive,” or its chunky guitar work a la Circles that propels “Humaine.” Both tracks demonstrate Elyose is on its way to becoming one of the premier acts within this genre; though at times its dense production and bass tracks seem too heavy for their delicate synth lines that give this album its distinct sound.
