Simon began singing in his father’s church as a child, but didn’t pursue music full time until his family relocated to Richmond, California in the late 50s. After their initial success with “When You’re Near,” other SS7 successes soon followed, including gospel-laced raveup “When You’re Near” and the country/soul synthesis of Harlan Howard’s regretful “The Chokin’ Kind,” which Simon transformed into a number one R&B hit in early 1969. Additionally, Simon recorded Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham’s spine-chilling “Let’s Do It Over” at Rick Hall’s FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals with Bergen White providing punchy horn lines while Scotty Moore provided engineering.
