EDM has since established itself as an art form with its own culture; yet some prominent members appear unwilling to address several key issues.
Staying current with new dance music can be an arduous task, but thankfully there are several excellent dance-music blogs out there to assist with that effort.
RA
While bleak storylines will always find an audience, their prevalence should make any multibillion-dollar industry nervous; and this fear should be even more prominent within dance music’s scene today.
RA was established in 2001 to highlight electronic music and artists on an international scale. The publication offers music and event reviews, news and features articles, interviews and films; ticket sales platforms; club promoter directories; artist/record label databases, as well as providing tickets sales services globally.
RA first emerged on the Grime scene during its early days through powerful freestyles and membership of Roadside G’s. Ten years after taking a hiatus from performing, this raw and tenacious veteran is back and showing no sign of slowing down; from appearing on Krept and Konan’s “7 Days” show to creating his viral narrative hit feature ‘Shiro’s Story’; his determination is undeniable.
XLR8R
XLR8R Magazine (pronounced Accelerator) was established in Seattle in 1993 as an original print publication and later switched over to online in 2005, providing news, interviews, weekly podcasts and subscription packages that include music news updates, downloads of MP3 tracks as well as mobile phone wallpaper artwork for subscribers.
Interview episodes on this site offer an expansive variety of styles and musical genres, and also feature interviews with prominent figures in dance music culture. Interviews range from intimate to epic; many even contain live footage from performances! For anyone who appreciates dance music, these shows are must-watchs!
Early in its existence, XLR8R chronicled Seattle house-music scene and DJ collectives like Hardkiss Brothers and Wicked crew. However, as this scene fragmented in the late ’90s into various camps, XLR8R shifted focus to cover emerging drum-and-bass contingent. When this genre branch out into new styles XLR8R expanded coverage further still to include all forms of experimental music; therefore its current editorial palette encompasses everything from drum n bass to electro and house to laptop techno.
As XLR8R has evolved from an indie mini-magazine into a global multimedia platform, its integrity and indie spirit remain intact. Staffers grew up listening to underground music that they cover; they have immense respect for artists who push the limits of their craft; they strive to produce a magazine that captures electronic music’s expansive world.
In March 2007, XLR8R unveiled its web-based television channel XLR8R TV, airing every Tuesday evening. This show showcases artists covered by the magazine as well as interviews with editors. Thanks to this success, major-label advertisers who refuse to pay for space have no chance of advertising against it in print form.
