Few bands in rock history have had such an enduring and influential presence as The Rolling Stones. Their gritty blues-based sound and unpredictable live performances established them as one of the world’s premier rock acts. Over 250 million albums were sold globally under their auspices alone – and its music remains an influence on modern-day rock.
The group was first formed in 1962 in London, England from musicians who had played together in local clubs and pubs. Their debut recording – a cover version of Chuck Berry’s “Come On” from 1963 – gave them enough momentum to start creating original compositions – leading them on to produce one hit after another as one of music history’s most successful bands.
By the time of their classic album release in 1968, The Rolling Stones had become an unrivaled musical force. Beggars Banquet helped cement their position as rock royalty while simultaneously cementing them as masters of studio album format. Their success also reached new heights with “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” their groundbreaking single, as well as legendary concerts at Altamont Speedway in northern California where violence ensued when one member of Hells Angels motorcycle gang was fatally wounded during this concert.
