With its roots in African American music and rural folk culture, the banjo holds a special place in American musical styles such as bluegrass, old-time, Dixieland jazz, biguine calypso and mento as well as Caribbean genres like biguine. Additionally, its timeless beauty makes it a critical component in contemporary and modern classical compositions by Don Vappie, Jerry Garcia, Bela Fleck Tony Trischka (notably in Henze’s Sixth Symphony).

Innovation of the banjo that began during the minstrel age continued into modernity with raised metal frets, exotic woods and tone-rings to produce more powerful tones. These changes allowed musicians to experiment with playing styles in order to become famous for their banjo playing skills; famous names like Eddie Peabody, Ola Belle Reed and the Stanley Brothers all left an imprint on its history.

Modern musicians have taken to playing banjo as a form of entertainment, from folk and country music, through bluegrass. Easy to learn and versatile in its soundscapes, the banjo makes an excellent statement about oneself while adding depth and dimension to any ensemble.

Professional Setup & Inspection

If you are new to banjos, it may be worthwhile to hire a professional for initial setup and inspection of your new banjo. Costs typically range from $50-100 depending on type and store; hiring one of these experts will help make sure it plays optimally!

Most banjos ship from the factory with loose heads. You can test how tight their head is by looking inside of the resonator (you may need to remove it first) and looking at any depressions in the drum head; aim for no more than 1/8″ displacement so your banjo will remain tuneable even as your playing position changes. This will also make tuning much simpler!

Coordinator rods are another critical feature to look out for when purchasing a banjo, as these long bolt-like components run between heel and tailpiece to adjust tension on drum head for even tone and provide additional neck stability. On cheaper or backless banjos there may only be one, while heavier and higher priced models often feature two. Their purpose is to adjust tension for even tone while adding stability to neck structure – tight or very loose coordinator rods may prevent your instrument from tuning correctly and compromise sound production.

Check the Bridge – On most five-string banjos, the bridge should sit approximately 12″-13″ from the twelfth fret. This can be easily checked by mounting and tuning up your banjo with bridge. When fretted at 12th fret and played without frets unfretted you should easily hear difference in sound between these strings; if they do not fall within this range it can be adjusted by simply moving either end of bridge up or down until your strings are in their correct positions.
