Christian Death Metal Music

Many Christians may quickly dismiss bands that play heavy metal music, believing it promotes death, drugs and suicide. Yet when given time to investigate this genre more fully they would soon realize this is simply not the case.

The Origins of Christian Death

Christian Death, one of the most influential Gothic acts ever, can boast a complex and troubled past. Valor Kand took control of the band in 1985, shifting their direction in 1988 with their release, The Scriptures. One year after The Scriptures disbanded, Williams moved forward as an individual artist while working on experimental and performance art projects with Eva O (nee Oritz). In 1989 he revived Christian Death for several nostalgic live shows with Shadow Project group featuring Eva O singing lead vocals and guitar alongside Listo on bass guitar and Paris on keyboards, recording two albums together (Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes), embarking on their first European tour and embarking upon their first album release cycle (Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes).

In 1996, they reformed with drummer David Glass and Gitane Demone replacing Paris as vocalists and recorded Born Again Anti Christian; touring alongside Britain’s Cradle of Filth members who helped elevate their sound further.

Defying Death’s Evangelism

Christian Death has long been an influential player in extreme metal. They’ve taken an aggressive stance against organized religion and conventional morality with an eagerness for provocation, often through cover art and lyrics featuring imagery depicting death rock symbolism such as blasphemy, morbidity, drug use and sexual perversity – Christian Death’s influence can still be felt today in bands like TYPE O NEGATIVE and DANZIG.

Rozz Williams formed his first band, the Upsetters, which would later morph into Christian Death. Their name derives from Revelation in which antichrist is described as being the destroyer. Early albums included singles such as “I Am Lucifer” and “We Are the Light”.

In 1986, drummer Valor Kand replaced Williams and released the album Catastrophe Ballet. To support it they also toured Europe with vocalist Laura Arrington along with guitarists Gitane Demone and David Glass.

Since their formation, Cradle of Filth have continued to release new material. Their most metal album to date, Symbols of Sin was released in 2000 and featured guest appearances by members from British black metal group Cradle of Filth. Furthermore, they’ve performed extensively both across Europe and in North America.

Christian death metal has a lengthy history.
