What is Electronica?
Electronica refers to several genres of music which utilise various electronic devices – synthesizers, drum machines, samplers and computers among them – in order to produce sounds. Electronica tends to have a more peaceful ethos than EDM music, often comparable to classical music in that it can be soothing and relaxing to listen to. Though groove-heavy EDM songs might sometimes have similar grooves to them, electronica generally features lighter, less heavy beats.
Electronica music tends to utilize vocals with happier, uplifting themes compared to some EDM songs, making this genre very accessible for listening purposes and enjoyable by almost everyone.
Bonobo vs. Four Tet
Simon Green (aka Bonobo) of Brighton-based electronic music artist is well known in the downtempo and chillout genres. His music can be heard through expensive headphones at any venue or cafe and sets a relaxing ambience.
Fragments marks an expansion in his sound with vocals joining the mix, and jazz influences can be heard through smooth samples of pizzicato double bass making their way into several tracks.
Kieran Hebden, better known by his stage name Four Tet, is another well-recognized producer. With an education in classical piano performance and performing since age 14, Four Tet has drawn influence from Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher and other artists in his early releases.
