Hip Hop Technique
Hip hop dance requires an additional dose of physical imagination and boldness when it comes to performing moves like jumping and spinning. Dancers must create shapes with their bodies that classical ballet could never dream up; pointy feet become flexed; body lines break; arms and legs often work in parallel for most moves; hip hop emcees and DJs add another element by freestyling or “MCing” commentary during moves.
Hip hop’s pioneer emcees and DJs laid the groundwork for its later expansion, inspiring other art forms like graffiti. Graffiti artists decorate walls, buildings, and outdoor surfaces with colorful designs that reflect street art’s roots in hip hop music; graffiti artists use similar visual expressions with colorful designs on walls or buildings as graffiti tags; while hip hop music (also called rap) fuses traditional rhythms and tempos with contemporary soul and funk influences to form its signature sound.
Hip hop draws heavily from African-American culture, drawing inspiration from dance battles between two opponents known as b-boying. Emcees, or MC’s, direct and lead hip hop dance parties with energetic and captivating performances by their energetic MCs; other improvisational elements of hip hop include popping and locking which involve isolated movements to the beat; these later became choreographed versions known as new style hip hop that often accompany musical artist performances both online and live on stage.
